REDSKINS.com reports
Pretty soon, Clinton Portis could be hosting his own awards show.
On Friday, Portis won the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week award for his performance in the Redskins' 14-11 win over the Cleveland Browns at FedExField last Sunday.
Fans voted Portis the winner in an online contest on NFL.com. Portis beat out St. Louis's Steven Jackson and Tennessee's LenDale White for the award.
Portis recorded 27 carries for 175 rushing yards--a lofty 6.5 yards-per-carry average--and a touchdown in leading the Redskins to a win over the Browns . He also caught one pass for eight yards.
It was Portis’s fourth consecutive 100-yard effort of the season. He would tie a franchise record for most consecutive 100-yard rushing games if he surpasses the century mark this Sunday against the Lions. The mark is shared by Rob Goode (1951), Portis (2005) and Ladell Betts (2006).
Against Cleveland, Portis reeled off several long runs--including 20-, 27- and 24-yard pickups--as the Redskins’ offensive line wore down the Browns defense.
Portis scored the game’s first points in the third quarter. On a 1st-and-goal at the Browns’ 3-yard line, Portis took a handoff and charged into the line, following blocks by Jon Jansen and Randy Thomas. He dove into the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown run.
"All of the personal stats and personal ideas [about putting up big numbers], wanting to do this and wanting to do that--all of that is out for me," Portis said after the game. "I want to win. It does not matter if I have 175 yards or if I have 75 yards. If we come out with a win, then I come out with a smile on my face."
It's the second time this season Portis has won the FedEx honor. He previously won after Week 5 when he rushed for 145 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles in a 23-17 Redskins win.
Along with Portis’s award, FedEx makes a $1,000 donation in the winning players’ names to the local Safe Kids USA coalitions in Washington D.C. to support pedestrian safety efforts. Safe Kids USA is a national non-profit organization that works to prevent accidental injury among children.
This season, FedEx plans to surpass the $1 million mark in terms of charity donations they have made to deliver safe kids through the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Player of the Week Awards program.
