Reid: Sunday Is What Matters
November 8, 2006
By CHRIS McPHERSON
In his first meeting with the media at the NovaCare Complex since the beginning of the bye week, head coach Andy Reid said that no matter how well his team practices or prepares for this Sunday's game against the "explosive" Washington Redskins the important thing is "how we play on Sunday."
After the 13-6 loss to Jacksonville on Oct. 29, the team's third straight, Reid gave the players the bye week off because he thought "they needed to get away and come back fresh mentally and physically."
WR Reggie Brown is enjoying a breakout year, but drops have plagued all the receivers
The Eagles "had a nice practice" on Monday, according to Reid, as they try to eliminate the hiccups that have left this team at 4-4.
On offense, Reid said the coaches spent the bye week looking very hard at the play calling. The Eagles have been slow out of the gate during the three-game losing streak with a total of only three first-half points. It's not just the play calling, though. The wide receivers lead the league in dropped passes.
"We've got to focus in a little better on the football," said Reid of the dropped passes. "Everybody has a piece of that pie."
On defense, the focus was on the defensive line. The mighty pass rush that ate up Giants quarterback Eli Manning eight times and Dallas' Drew Bledsoe seven, only has three sacks in the last three games. And the run defense was gashed for 209 yards by the Jaguars, which is not good with Washington's Clinton Portis coming to town.
"It's a little bit of a combination of things," said Reid of the pass rush.
The impact of the addition of cornerback William James is not known at this point. Reid would not say where James falls in the lineup, nor would he say if Rod Hood will return to his nickel corner spot. Hood missed four games with a heel injury, returned for the Jaguars game but only on special teams.
Speaking of special teams, as of now, Reno Mahe will assume both kick and punt return duties.
Reid spoke of the team's lack of emotion during the Jacksonville game and said he addressed it with the team. He was even able to joke when asked if he needed time off during the bye week, to which he replied that he "only needed a break from (the media)."
Reid can joke now because as he said before, it doesn't matter how good the team practices on Wednesday. It matters what the team does on Sunday.
