Some of you guys were not even born when Judas Priest was first playing, so I know some of you know nothing about them.
IMHO, they are THE best metal band of all time.
Man was I pumped for this show. Sunday night would be the first time I've seen Judas Priest live in 20 years (the other 2 times were ‘78 and ‘85).
Kurt (riggoranger), his friend Lou and I got to Nissan Pavilion around 6:00pm. Man, I could tell that it had been awhile since I was last at a "big" venue concert when I nearly had a heart attack at the prices of things. $7.50 for a beer, $5 for any kind of food, $4 for sodas. The Priest merchandise booth was even worse. $35 for a shirt, $40 for long sleeves, but I wanted a tour shirt, so I plunked down the $35 for one. They also had signed CD’s of their new album. Although I have the new CD, I got this anyway. It was only $20, the same price I paid for an unsigned one. Great deal.
Openers Queensryche went on stage 10 minutes early. This came as a huge shock to most people there, and everyone quickly made their way to their seats. This was the first time I’ve seen them live. Tate was amazing vocally, but nothing really grabbed me at all. There was even a small "getthefupandjumpalakorn" moment in one tune. They played a new song that actually sounded pretty decent. There were on for about 50 minutes or so. It seemed like there were a lot of people there to see them, as our section thinned out a bit after their set. Those wimps didn't have any idea what was coming. Queenryche was good, but they are past their prime.
Lights dimmed around 8:50 and Priest took to the stage with The Helion/Electric Eye. Of course, my eyes were fixated on Halford as he sang the first few lines. Holy mother of all vocals!! Sunday night Halford was on FIRE. Not even close to sounding his age, he sang, shrieked, and screamed his way perfectly through the set. He owned Ripper Owens in every category vocally, and performance-wise it's not even funny. Total domination.
Then they played “Metal Gods.” Totally amazing. Played a few songs from their new album, then played “Beyond the Realms of Death” and BLEW THE ROOF off the place. Then a couple of songs later played “Victim of Changes”, my favorite Priest song. Everyone there (including myself) was singing along with the band. It just blew me away.
Halford has to be the loudest singer I've heard live. There were times, notably one of the high screams in Painkiller, when I seriously thought he was going to blow up the PA. I don't know where the power comes from. He would stand there, hunched over, place the microphone about a foot or more away from his mouth, and just scream. His voice was so loud sometimes, I could hear him egging the crowd on without the mic and I was sitting about 30 rows back. Vocally amazing, he commanded the audience from the opener to the final song, proving that he more that certainly deserves to be called the METAL GOD.
The rest of the band was great too. Glenn Tipton was amazing on guitar as always. K.K. Downing was just as powerful as 20 years ago. Scott was killer, Ian Hill steady. The sound was loud, but very very clear.
Then, for the first of 2 encores, they played Exciter and Painkiller. Then on the last encore, Harford rode out on his Harley and then they played “Hell bent for Leather, and finished up the show with “You got another thing coming."
The tickets were not real expensive, the seats good, the performance amazing. Soooooo worth it. I hope that I'll get a chance to see them again sometime soon!!
